You wanna get high? Well okay! Being new to cannabis is a great thing because you get to experience it for the very first time. Any long time user will tell you that those first times getting high are some of the most amazing (and intense) experiences that you can have. You’re entering a whole new world, and if this is your first time trying a mind-altering drug, then even more so!

You know how they say ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’? Well, we humans like to do that…a lot. So instead of judging cannabis by your first time getting high, give it a few chances before you call it quits. Hey, you may realize it’s not for you, but don’t knock it till you (properly) try it.

1. Get the dank

Years ago you didn’t have much choice about what weed you could get and it was more about just being able to find. Living in Canada and some states in the USA, you will have no problem finding high-quality cannabis that you know was treated right. You should want the best, not because you want to show off to your friends, but because you want quality. Even if you think it’s costing more, you will only need to smoke a fraction of it to get the same effects and trust me, the first time you get high you aren’t going to need much.

2. Choose the Occasion & Place

If you’re like me, then you won’t need an occasion to get high for your first time, because getting high for the first time IS the occasion. So instead of saying occasion, let’s say ‘place’. You will want to think this out, where you smoke, especially your first time where it will determine how nice your experience is. Think about a place that makes you happy, but rather don’t do it in the middle of your favorite restaurant. Preferably somewhere relaxing, where there isn’t going to be anything too intense or dramatic.

For your first time, I wouldn’t recommend going to smoke somewhere where you need a lot of coordination. You may find simple things, like walking, can be difficult, so somewhere comfortable to sit or lie down is also great. Keep your schedule free for the day and make sure you can just sit back and enjoy the experience.

3. Assemble your Squad

Your first time shouldn’t be alone. Many smokers don’t ever like to smoke alone, but it’s all down to personal preference. When starting out, stick to smoking with friends. For two reasons, firstly, it’s a lot more fun. Smoking with friends can be some of your best times and you are going to laugh so hard that you can’t breathe. Secondly, and more boringly, it’s safer. You have never smoked weed before, so you should do it with a buddy. Nothing bad is going to happen, but when you aren’t thinking straight after your first bong rip, you’re going to want a friend there just to reassure you that everything’s okay.

4. Weapon of Choice

Now that we’ve got the logistics out the way, let’s smoke some weed. Before you can do that, you need a way to smoke. You can smoke a bong, a joint, a blunt, a pipe, a dab or you can opt for the healthier option of vaping – it’s entirely up to you. Vaping can be a lot milder than smoking if not done perfectly, so if you would rather not fuss with that, stick to one of the golden oldies, like a bong, pipe, or joint.Now that we’ve got the logistics out the way, let’s smoke some weed. Think about this and don’t load yourself a monster bong on your first time, ease into it.

5. Breathe it in…

Of all the first-timers I’ve smoked with, this is the biggest mistake. Everyone smokes it like a cigarette, a light inhale followed by an immediate exhale. If you just want to taste the smoke then that’ll be fine, but if you want to get high you are going to have to take that smoke into your lungs.

The simplest way to make it happen is to do the double breath, first, you breathe in the smoke, and then you breathe in air on top of that. If you do that with enough cannabis, you are guaranteed to get high. Even when you hit a bong/pipe this happens, but it happens when you clear the chamber of smoke, so it’s automatic. It is mainly a joint that causes rookies to not inhale and then they say ‘ahh I never got high on my first time’ – obviously not, you need to get THC into your system.

6. Munchies and Dry mouth

Everyone knows about the munchies, but not everyone knows about dry mouth, both are side-effects of smoking cannabis and you are going to want to be prepared. Get some of your favorite snacks and food ready, but also make sure you have an ice cold beverage on standby. After getting dry mouth, that drink is going to feel like rain in a very very dry desert.  The food? Just eat it and enjoy, nothing more needs to be said.
